Job Summary of Roles and Responsibilities
Power Engineers, Inc. is actively seeking a talented, energetic, self-starting Electrical Engineer student for an internship performing design activities for electrical substations. Classified as an Intern I, II or III, this individual will work with our Substation design teams out of our Power Delivery Substation Department in our Richmond, Virginia office. Flexibility is available to work hybrid and/or in the office.
Responsibilities
Under the guidance of multiple experienced engineers, the successful Electrical Engineer intern candidate will be involved in and experience all aspects of substation design. Over the candidate’s internship, they will be involved in the development of the following substation design components.
Perform and/or assist with the detailed design of low to extra-high voltage substations including, but not limited to
One-line diagrams
Schematics
Wiring diagrams
SCADA
Communications
Station physical layouts
Sections/Elevations
Cable and conduit plans and details
Ground grid design and details
Foundation plans and details
Structural plans and details
Control enclosure design and details
Lightning protection plans
Yard lighting plans
Bills of Materials
Shall learn, understand and adhere to client standards and processes while working individually or within a team to complete complex and technically challenging designs
Perform design calculations in accordance with industry standards such as IEEE, NEC, NESC, etc.
Assist senior engineers with QA/QC design checks
Possible site visits
Required Education/Experience
Pursuit of a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology from an accredited university.
The candidate must have strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship.
The candidate is interested in consulting engineering and the electric utility industry.
Desired Education/Experience
Minimum 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA).
Successful completion of junior-level courses in power system analysis and/or power system protection is a plus.
Attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills will be critical for the successful completion of tasks.
Prior internship and/or related engineering experience is a plus.
Students who have passed or are scheduled to take the FE/EIT exam will be strongly considered for this position.
Familiarity with design, drafting or engineering software such as MATHCAD, SOLIDWORKS, AUTOCAD, etc. as well as Microsoft Excel is beneficial.
