Roles and Responsibilities

  • This position will be based in our Texas or Rocky Mountain teams and the work is located throughout west Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado regions

  • Drive overall project scope, including testing and commissioning of Protection and Control systems on high voltage substations

  • Sequence, schedule, and coordinate demolition/construction/testing outages in utility substations

  • Prepare isolation plans for required work that allow the work to be safely performed without causing unintended trip events.

  • Coordinate electricians, relay technicians, and commissioning engineers to deliver properly installed, tested, and energized new protection and SCADA systems. Lead and supervise these staff while on site.

  • Inventory BOM list to received items on-site and coordinate any missing items with the design team.

  • Provide field engineering and verification of wiring per design drawings. Submit and track RFIs related to system design or implementation.

  • Verify SCADA and DFR points with utility operations staff; document results, communicate and resolve discrepancies

  • Technical and safety development

  • Support Project Lead or Field Supervisor on projects

  • Perform Job Hazard Analysis – JHA

  • Attend virtual and on-site meetings related to the project. Collaborate with project management and the client to identify and mitigate project risks and resolve schedule conflicts.

  • Maintain, sign off, and deliver project record drawings and test documentation.

  • Perform clerical responsibilities such as timecards, expense reports, and project reports

Required Education/Experience

  • Five to ten (5-10) years of professional experience in the electrical testing industry, including experience in medium and high voltage circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, and substation protection and controls testing

  • Experience in electric utility operation, substation construction, outage sequencing, and commissioning

  • Demonstrable expertise on transmission, substation, and distribution relays (SEL, Basler, Beckwith, and GE families) and protective schemes

  • Experience validated substation protection and control wiring

  • Technical skills related to protective relays include relay calibration utilizing test sets/measuring devices such as Omicron CMC 256/356 and Doble F6150, control scheme testing, testing of the sensing CT/PT circuits, ability to upload settings to microprocessor relays, and static & dynamic testing of microprocessor-based protective relays

  • Proven experience with Electrical Field-Testing standards, practices, and procedures such as NETA, IEEE, NFPA applicable standards

  • Demonstrable knowledge of testing electrical distribution, generation and transmission projects with voltage levels ranging from 15 kV to 500 kV, including protective relays, circuit breakers, transformer controls, SCADA systems, and DFRs

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills

  • Detail-oriented with excellent analytical skills, and the ability to perform mathematical calculations

  • Working knowledge of computer systems, microprocessors or relay software and project environment skills

  • Demonstrable expertise in the use of the latest computer controlled solid-state test equipment (Automated protective relay test equipment such as Omicron or Doble)

  • Administrative software: MS Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Experienced in managing electrical drawings

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift 50+lbs with or without a reasonable accommodation

  • Must be willing to travel (up to 80%)

Desired Education/Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Technology degree in a similar discipline

  • Experience testing and commissioning electrical equipment on high voltage substations such as CTs, CCVTs, PLC systems, and DC systems including batteries and battery chargers

  • Have performed brownfield retrofits of relaying and equipment

Salary DOE: The pay range for this position is $90,000- $140,000 per year; however, base pay may be higher or lower depending on the candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This figure does not include additional compensation such as health benefits, vacation, 401k, etc.
