Distribution Protection and Controls Engineer

Job Summary of Roles and Responsibilities:

POWER Engineers’ Distribution Engineering Services group is currently seeking a Distribution Protection and Controls Engineer thatwill be responsible for the performance of electrical protection & control systems, for electrical distribution systems within the power delivery/electrical utility sector.The ideal candidate will report to the Hailey, ID office (virtually) while working in a fully remote position. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and perform engineering tasks associated with a critical or analytical engineering project or a small number of complex projects that require specialized knowledge in many areas, such as:

  • Substation Protection

  • Circuit Breaker Protection

  • DER Interconnection Protection

  • Line Recloser Protection

  • Equipment Protection (Transformers, Capacitor Banks, etc)

  • Grid Modernization

  • Protection Practices (WildFire Mitigation, FLISR, VVO, etc)

  • Arc Flash

  • Event Analysis.

  • Will interact with a wide variety of individuals to obtain the required information needed to improve performance of electrical distribution protection & control

  • Lead and perform engineering tasks associated with a critical or analytical engineering project or a small number of complex projects that require specialized knowledge in many areas

  • Exercises authority and technical leadership on assignments that are often self-initiated and self-directed. Assignments are strategic and have significant long-term implications to the achievement of overall business objectives.

  • Track project schedules and budgets

  • Participation in industry working groups or standards (IEEE, CIGRE, IEC, ANSI)

  • Participation as a presenter in industry conferences

  • Some travel should be expected

  • Ability to support other distribution disciplines such as Planning and Grid Modernization

Required Education/Experience

  • A BSEE degree.

  • Registration as an Engineer In Training or Professional Engineer.

  • 3+ years of experience in the electrical power delivery industry.

  • Demonstrated experiencing in Electrical Protection Analysis using one of the following software packages – Aspen, Arc Flash Pro, Cape, CYME, or Synergi.

  • Demonstrated experiencing using one or more of the following electrical control software packages – SEL acSELerator, GE EnerVista, Eaton ProView, Beckwith ISPcom.

  • Demonstrated experiencing with one or more of the following relay packages – SEL 651-R, SEL-351S, GE F60, Eaton Form 6/7, Beckwith M-7679.

  • Must have a strong command of the English language and possess good written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work in design teams, is self-motivated to perform assigned tasks, and take the initiative to learn new topics.

Desired Education/Experience

  • A Master’s degree in Engineering.

  • Significant knowledge of the design and operation of overhead and underground distribution lines (4 kV through 35 kV).

  • Demonstrated advance templating and/or logic solutions internal to SEL, GE, ABB, or Beckwith.

  • Demonstrated advance protection solutions internal to Aspen, Cape or external programming scripting.

  • Demonstrated industry participation in industry working groups, standards, conference presentations, or publications.

  • Experience with developing utility protection standards.

  • Experience with the integration of distributed generation within the protection process.

  • Field Testing and/or Commission Process Experience.
