Job Summary of Roles and Responsibilities
POWER Engineers is seeking an experienced, energetic, self-starting team member with a strong physical design background to perform engineering design activities for electrical substations. This position is posted in multiple POWER office locations with the ability to work remotely from a mutually acceptable location (please note in the application questions where you prefer to be located).
Responsibilities
The Physical Designer will share responsibility with the rest of the department to produce a product consistent with POWER’s mission statement and our culture. The Designer is expected to support the group in achieving the goals of the department, maintain POWER’s high-quality standards, promote internal teamwork and meet the needs of our clients. This position is also responsible for assisting with developing, maintaining, and strengthening client relationships within the region.
- Perform and direct others in the detailed design of medium to extra high voltage substations including, but not limited to
o Station physical layouts
o Sections/Elevations
o Cable and conduit plans and details
o Ground grid design and details
o Foundation plans and details
o Structural plans and details
o Control enclosure design and details
o Lightning protection plans
o Yard lighting plans
o Bills of Materials
o Inter-discipline coordination activities
o Specify and select substation equipment
o Contribute to substation equipment specifications
o Construction support
o Facility studies
o Site visits
Perform QA/QC for deliverables to clients
Support proposal development
Support project budgeting, project scheduling and project reporting
Support the mentorship and training of other team members
Shall understand and adhere to client standards and processes while working individually or within a team to complete complex and technically challenging designs
Occasional travel will be required.
Required Education/Experience
Associate degree or equivalent technical education
Four (4) or more years of experience in substation physical design
Experience in 15kV through 138kV substation design and IEEE/ANSI standards
Mechanical reasoning skills and attention to detail
Experience with AutoCAD (Version 2020 or newer)
Experience with MicroStation (V8 or newer)
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, with an emphasis on Excel and Word
Experience filling the role of substation designer for several substation projects occurring concurrently
Demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, tracking and organizing many tasks of varying importance and size
Proven ability and desire to mentor and help others
A strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel
Desired Education/Experience
Six (6) or more years of experience in substation design.
An understanding of substation equipment and its function
Familiarity with Raster Design and/or Bentley Descartes
Ability to produce applicable drawings from rough sketches, notes, vendor drawings, and other
Ability to select non-engineered materials (bus, high voltage switches, cable, insulators)
3D CAD experience and/or Building Information Modeling (BIM) experience
Experience in electric utility substation design (15kV through 500kV) and IEEE/ANSI standards is a plus.
Ability to successfully participate in multiple projects concurrently and manage budgets and schedules.

Salary DOE: The pay range for this position is $35K - $150K per year; however, base pay may be higher or lower depending on the candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This figure does not include additional compensation such as health benefits, vacation, 401k, etc.
